Retrospective vs prospective study

A retrospective study is one that is conducted on existing data, in contrast to a prospective study that actively collects data. Prospective studies typically provide stronger scientific evidence because they can be designed to reduce bias, but retrospective studies are valuable for generating results more quickly and cheaper.

In ME/CFS research, both retrospective and prospective studies, especially when used in tandem, are important for identifying new insights that can improve patient outcomes. In a population that can experience debilitating consequences from participating in research, retrospective studies provide an opportunity to produce new hypotheses that can then be tested in prospective studies.

OMF’s Ronald G. Tompkins Harvard ME/CFS Collaboration is conducting an extensive retrospective study of data from invasive cardiopulmonary exercise tests in people with ME/CFS and Long COVID. Read more about the project here.
