In the context of research, calling something “significant” is a statistical description. It’s a term that indicates it’s unlikely that random chance could explain a result.
In ME/CFS research, it’s especially important to calculate significance with proper statistical methods because each study is trying to evaluate as many components of the disease as possible. The more tests you run on data, the more you can introduce bias, so calculating significance is less straightforward than in other research areas.
OMF’s Computational Research Center for Complex Diseases brings expertise in data analysis and statistics to our collaborative research. Learn more about the team and their work here.
